Otpia - OTP System - Case Study by TruTed

Project overview

OTPia is a mobile authenticator app built to simplify multi-factor authentication while improving reliability and user confidence. The app enables fast account setup through QR code scanning and generates OTPs instantly, while continuously monitoring OTP validity and service connectivity. By combining a smooth onboarding flow with proactive alerts, OTPia helps users stay authenticated and avoid getting locked out when issues occur.

Project goals

  • Streamline account setup with a one-tap QR scanner
  • Proactively detect OTP validity and service disruptions
  • Prevent user lockouts through fast, reliable alerts
  • Improve install-to-active-user conversion with a better experience than built-in authenticators

Key results / outcomes

  • 99% of users with a connection issue are notified within 60 seconds of disruption detection
  • 99.9% uptime for the notification service with sub-second OTP generation time
  • Independent security audit passed with zero critical vulnerabilities identified

Our approach & process

How we understood the challenge, designed the solution, then tested and refined it.

1

Discovery & planning

In the discovery phase, we mapped user pain points found in traditional authenticator apps—mainly slow setup, missed expiry windows, and unexpected service disruptions. We defined the core user journeys (add account, generate OTP, receive alerts) and set measurable success targets around speed, uptime, notification delivery, and audit readiness. A clear architecture plan was prepared to support real-time monitoring, secure data handling, and scalable notification delivery.

2

Design & development

We designed a minimal, direct UX focused on “one-tap” account setup using QR scanning, with a clean OTP display and reliable background monitoring. Development focused on fast OTP generation, secure local storage practices, and a robust notification service capable of detecting disruptions and alerting users quickly. The system was engineered to remain lightweight and stable while maintaining a high security baseline.

3

Testing & optimization

Testing covered OTP accuracy, QR scanning reliability, notification delivery timing, and edge cases related to connectivity interruptions. Performance and stability were optimized to ensure sub-second OTP generation and consistent service uptime. Security checks and audit preparation were prioritized to ensure compliance-ready delivery without compromising user experience.
